Would there be a performance difference for my system over 1gb of video ram or 512mb of video ram?

I am looking to get an HD 5670 for a budget gaming rig, but they come in 512mb and 1gb models. I read something that says the only thing that the video card memory does is supply the maximum resolution of the monitor. My monitor is only a 1024 x 768 resolution. So, would it be acceptable to get a 512mb card instead of a full gigibyte? Thanks!|||If you are gaming at 1024x768 you will probably never get the 512MB frame buffer full, but if they are close in price, spend the extra money on the 1GB version so when you upgrade to a larger screen in the future you will be set.|||That info about maximum resolution etc is not correct.

You can do 1024 x 768 with about 2MBs (just thinking back to the video cards of early 1990s)

The video RAM in gaming gets used to store graphic textures and pre-rendered frames and a whole bunch of other stuff that I don't understand.

If you play demanding games you probably will see some extra benefit from 1Gig video RAM.
