My GeForce 9600 gt 512mb video card overheats when I play games? Any solutions?

I desperately need help with my video card. the video card that i'm currently using (the PNY geforce 9600 gt) overheats a lot when i'm playing any pc game. Whether it's a steam (valve) game, games for windows, or any game in general. Whenever i'm playing for a couple of minutes, the game crashes the computer and i'm forced to restart the whole computer. i don't know whether i need a cooling system or a bigger fan for the video card but whatever the case might be, i need to fix this issue because it's been going on for a couple of weeks now. i'm open to all recommendations; whether i need a fan, cooling system, or a new video card. but if i do need a new video card, which one can i get that doesn't overheat to much. my power supply is a 500w. thanks for everybody's help.|||I truly doubt it's your video card overheating... Make sure all the fans are spinning and that everything has the correct power input. download speedfan (google it), and check what the temp is under "GPU" most graphics cards can keep running up to 105c... that's past waters boiling point, but these things are made for heat! My 8600GT once got to 112c... My new GTX280 hasn't gone past 78c... What you should do is start a game, and play it for around 30 seconds. Hit the windows key (make sure speed fan is already open), and check to see what the temp's are. If you want more help once you find the temps, email me and I will be happy to help you - thesrbirdman@gmail.com

I'm a big computer guru and I know temps/cooling really well.|||Well this really sounds like a cooling issue, what kind of case are you using?

Try opening up the side of the case and placing a giant room fan there for a really cheap solution, or add some more fans to the case if possible.

Hope that helps :)|||i have the same card and i had the same problem, a temporary fix would be to take the side of the case of. i bought more fans for my computer tho,|||take the side panel off and put a house fan blowing into the pc....see if it still crashes...if it does not then you know you have a heat problem....

clean out the inside of the case with a can of compressed air...a lot of dust can overheat a system...and also try updating your drivers....

also you can download and install evga precision tool....most gpus out of the factory, the fan runs at 30%...with that tool you can raise the fan speed to 100%....

also make sure your case has adequate cooling....air getting sucked in from the front and a good exhaust to get rid of the hot air out the back or top....evga precission keeps track of the temp of the gpu also..so you know where your at temp wise.

Install it and see what your GPU temperature is. If it's over something like 90 celcius, that's pretty dangerous and you definitely need to install more fans. If you didn't mess with it like change voltage or overclocked it, the stock fan should be just fine. 80 is kind of borderline overheating. Most modern cards can be fine up till 75 and most idle at 50-60.

Make sure you don't put your computer where the sun shines like in a window. Close the blinds and open the window when it's too hot inside the house. Dust out the fans by buying some compressed air at your local radio shack or whatever. Do this if you think your fans are full of dust bunnies. You can tell by looking.

If you have a fan blowing in already, get a fan to blow air out. Two fans in and one fan out is usually good. Make sure they are at least 80mm fans to get maximum ventilation.
