I would like to upgrade my video card, 256MB or 512MB? can my dell inspiron 531 handle a larger card?

I want to upgrade my video card from a geforce 8300GS to GeForce 8600GT or GeForce 8600GTS. Should 256MB be good enough? Top game i'm running now is age of empires 3.

I liked these two cards for there price and higher clock speeds:

One other big thing i'm worried about is my dell inspiron 531 power supply. it only came with a 300watt. I already added a 2nd hard drive. could it handle either one of these video cards? thanks|||you probably will need a bigger power supply

also, it doesn't matter about amount of video ram much when determining from video cards, the clock speed and memroy bandwidth is far more important|||This card will do AOE3 easily, and is cheaper than those you listed. 256MB of graphics memory is plenty for the casual gamer.

The 8600 GT is a decent budget card. Enjoy. :]|||It probably will handle it via the pci express slot.

go with the 8600gts- it is better. and yes if you can get a 512 mb model then that would be better too.

you should run a higher watt power supply for it. you should get at least a 350 watt power supply.|||Nvidia 8600 GTS is the best pick out of your research but it is not possible to hook it on to your computer until you increase your Power suppy wattage , Atleast a 450 W PSU is apprecialtble . If this comes to be a blockade to your budget then buy a Nvidia 8600 GT and a PSU which would be equal to the cost of Nvidia 8600 GTS . Go for a 256 MB as your system already has plenty of RAM.
